I am a huge soccer fan.
Huge.
I like quite a few teams (ranked in order of my support).
1. Manchester City-English Premier League aka Not Manchester United. I started following Man City during the late 90’s because my neighbor was a fan of Manchester United. Since United are the New York Yankees of Soccer I sided with the New York Mets of English soccer.

2. Red Bull New York-My favorite MLS team at this time, but when Seattle comes on board in ‘09 my allegiance will change. Till now the Red Bulls have be a team of hard knocks, but they have Juan Pablo Angel (the best player in MLS) and they have Jozy Altidore (the 17 year old boy wonder and future kingpin of US National soccer).

3. Chivas USA How can you not like this team? Plus, they have a supporters group called St. Patrick’s Brigade which has huge historical connotations. I never knew about a group of American’s that fought for the Mexican’s during the Spanish American war, and now that a group of English speakers have formed a new supporters group for the predominately Spanish market team. Watch this cool video of the fans…fast forward 2min in to see the giant jersey/flag that the fans raise in support of the crowd. Video.

4. Celtic F.C. My dad got me a Celtic soccer jersey about 10 years ago. I then started to do some research about the kings of Scottish soccer and I soon found a rich cultural history, and a distinct hatred of Protestant England (in the form of the Glasgow Rangers), naturally a perfect fit. Great soccer and a political slant that screams, “Get the hell out of Northern Ireland.” A match made in heaven. (Dis has a good post of a video of the team, put to the speech from Any Given Sunday)

(Guess who just scored on the Rangers? They look awfully pissed.)
5. Real Betis-They are my Spanish League favorite. They rock the full green jerseys and have a pretty rich history of their own. They are a Sevilla team and the best part about them is that they are constantly the underdogs against the other major teams, such as, Real Madrid and Barcelona. (Real fans hate Real Madrid, and by default Real Salt Lake).

…
I also like a few national teams. At first i wasn’t a fan of the US National team, but then I started to realize that they have some pretty bad ass players that have grown from nothing and have become stars in their own right. A prime example of this is Eddie Johnson, formerly of the KC Wizards, he is off to Fulham FC in the Premier League. Here is a picture of Eddie:

He also has a neck tattoo. Possibly making him the only cool person in the history of the world with a neck tattoo.
Anyways.
…
I don’t like the Chicago Fire. I like them even less after they unveiled their new uniform yesterday:

Puke. I understand the desire for a jersey sponsor and the amount of money that it brings in, but holy crap is this uniform ugly. They should take a lesson from the Galaxy and at least make it barely likeable:

You knew this post would drag me out…
the once respectable Fulham FC will get relegated if they don’t get it together, and quick, so it is likely Mr Jones will be in the Coca-Cola Chumpionship next season.
I kind of hope LA Galaxy rolls. I like Beckham and I want the club to do be successful and put the MLS on the map.
And where is Arsenal? Man city? Is there any convincing you that the Gunners are most fun team to watch in the Premiership, perhaps in all of soccer (aka football)?

Manchester City: Fine at home, shit on the road.
You told me you only liked NYRB. That was a lie.

You only get to root for one team per pro sport, jackass. Them’s the rools.
It doesn’t look like the best decision now, but for futbol, I chose Charlton Athletic a long time ago, and I’m sticking with them…
Comment by Tuffy — January 16, 2008 @ 7:24 am
What about DC United? Back stabber.
Comment by Sarah — January 16, 2008 @ 8:38 am
I’m beginning to think you’re not a sports fan at all (The Chicago Blackhawks?! – you’ve got to be kidding me!). Rather, I think you’re just a jersey fan! Oooh, let’s root for the team with the prettiest uniforms. Yeah! C’mon, admit it that you’re fav TV show is “Project Runway”, right?

Ha.

Project Runway is awesome, but not as cool as FSC.
Charlton Athletic is cool because of the name.
Marthaler-I am a fan of many teams…except the Wild.

DC United is cool.
But, they are the Yankees of pro soccer in the US.

TWO WORDS:
Bayern Munich
Comment by Eddy — January 16, 2008 @ 9:25 am
now I know what all the fuss is about. soccer is exciting to watch. I get FoxSoccerChannel which I have been watching lately since there’s no baseball on tv.
Why do they add minutes to the end of a game?
Comment by June — January 16, 2008 @ 9:34 am
Let’s see…. Would you be a fan of Minnesota’s pro hockey team if they had all of the same players and played in the same building but they were called mmmmmmm… the North Stars??? Yah, I thought so.
Super-rookie —-> The Quentessential Metrosexual.

S-R
Arsenal wears these red jerseys with contrasting white sleeves…totally hot! You’d like ‘em.
Comment by brandon — January 16, 2008 @ 10:37 am
I used to have season tickets to the North Stars. So, yes to your question.
June- they add the time on at the end of the games to make up for the time the ball is out of bounds, injuries, penalties etc…so it totals a full 90min.
Arsenal is sooooo over rated.
Bayern Munich is cool. But, bundeliga isn’t as popular here in the states.
Comment by super — January 16, 2008 @ 10:49 am
sr- i don’t have time to tell you all the thing wrong with your pick, but “they all are terrible choices” will have to do for now.
tuffy- one team per league in soccer. thems the rools. fools.
sr is a jersey fan, not a team fan. and, as you can see, he like crappy jerseys. but not only that, but contradicts his own statements, i.e. fire with best buy sucks, ny red bulls=totally legit corperate sponsorship.
wtf. i guess he thinks the team should be called the chicago best buys.
sellout.
p.s. blackhawks suck. (redwings bitch).

This might be the first time in history an engagement has been called off on the blogo-sphere.
Dis-I like awesome jerseys. Red Bull NY is evident of that as is Celtic and Real Betis, plus the baby blue of Man City if Mantastic.
Red Wings? Are you kidding me?
Comment by super — January 16, 2008 @ 1:20 pm
The Red Wings are indeed NY Yankees of hockey ( Gotta like South Park’s portrayal of them ). But, you cannot deny that they are a damn good team.
Rookie, you should like the Wings because of Chelios, who of course played for the Hawks for like a million years before he got smart and left them.
Comment by Dan I. — January 16, 2008 @ 2:03 pm
*the redbulls jersey sucks.
*the blackhawks is as bad as the redskins.
*every team in detriot [sic] is awesome. (except maybe the lions).
*the wild aren’t as bad as you think, and the jerseys are nice. (even if they look a bit like santas elves).
*the vert=crap team. rojo y blanco. if you must like a crap team in spain, at least like a top tier crap team… try villareal.
*don’t get talking too much about hockey, or i may reveal my love for the maple leafs.
Comment by (dis) — January 16, 2008 @ 2:13 pm
The Red Wings are lame. Just like Chelios (he should have retired years ago). In fact, the Red Wings are very overrated, just like Elite FlavoredBeverage Racing team.
The truth of the matter is this. The Hawks have an awesome history of awfulness. Hence, my love affair with them. I like teams that are difficult to cheer for. (dis) likes teams that buy championships.
You like teams that have bad fashion sense!
Comment by super — January 16, 2008 @ 2:15 pm
sr.
you and me.
3pm, by the flagpole.
i’m kicking your ass.
Comment by (dis) — January 16, 2008 @ 2:25 pm
Hmmm… Red Wings record: 33-10. Best in the league. Goals For: 160 Goals Against: 104. No other team even close to those numbers. They are quite good. Anaheim Ducks (who are truly lame) shut down everyone in the playoffs last year, except for the Wings who sliced and diced them. Anaheim was very lucky to get past the Wings with their ugly style of play.
Leafs are cool. Not doing so good this year, but still sportin the classic jersey, and they have loyal fans. ( Choosing a team based on loyalty doesn’t appear to be in Rookie’s realm ).
Are we having fun yet?
Comment by Dan I. — January 16, 2008 @ 2:34 pm
The Leafs are okay (no issues there, original 6 and everything).
The Blackhawks are not the same as the Redskins, Indians, Illini etc…
The Chicago Fire and whatever other teams that (dis) likes are all lame.
For real.
Comment by super — January 16, 2008 @ 3:23 pm
